Passementerie: The Art of Decorative Trimming

By: Krissy Millner | 01 Feb. 2025

First off, let’s start with the subject and its pronunciation! How many of you readers use the word “passementerie”? Pronounced pas-men-tree, it is the wonderful and ancient tradition of embellishments. Tassels, fringe, braids and cords have been around for centuries, and there is record of The Guild of Passementiers created in the 16th century in France. It took an apprentice 7 years to become a master in one of the subdivisions of the guild. I can’t help but reflect on a world devoted to arts and craft with such a level of detail. And, in my profession of interiors, the one thing that I am absolutely in love with is textiles and fine craftsmanship.

Although one might think of trim as something only used in more traditional interiors, it’s something that can enhance almost every design style.

From a very Bohemian vibe to an elegant European style, or a quaint cottage, trim can be used to add such incredible depth and texture. I have enjoyed buying handmade trims from all over the world in my design practice. I have some incredible craftsmen and dealers of antique textiles that I have met on my travels. Sometimes, it’s just a handwoven braid added to the ends of a lumbar pillow that truly changes a design from blah to beautiful. There are also very modern trims, like steel brads on tape that are very cool and sleek. Trim can also be made of natural elements like wood, raffia or feathers which is another modern detour from the traditional types woven with silk, cotton, linen or wool.

There is a resurgence today for interiors that are more colorful, more nuanced and personalized. I think the grey days of design are finally subsiding which is fine with me! The design work that we do focuses on creating unique and thoughtful interiors, and we imbue small details with every project that speaks to the homeowner’s style and taste. Adding something as simple, but yet luxurious as a yard of trim on a pillow can be a game changer for the design to really sing!

Can you tell I love passementerie?

Passementerie remains a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of decorative textile design. Though modern manufacturing has changed the way trims are produced, the tradition of handcrafting intricate embellishments continues to thrive in luxury fashion, interior design, and historical preservation. Whether adorning a gown or enhancing an interior, passementerie retains its place as an enduring symbol of attention to detail, excellence in craftsmanship and enduring beauty. Next time you watch a period piece on Netflix…..enjoy the fringe, gimp, and tassels!!

Cheers,

Krissy
